We would like to introduce you to personalised eLearning. Or more accurately: personalised eLearning journeys. The thing we love about eLearning is that it delivers a consistent training message across an entire workforce. Key messages, additional information, it’s all there and each learner receives the same experience. So what do we do about the fact that many learners come into a course with a different amount of pre-existing knowledge? We provide them with personalised elearning.

The problem with standard elearning

Many users get frustrated having to take eLearning, particularly when they feel they already understand the subject matter. This is particularly the case with compliance eLearning, where users are often required to retake courses each year. Elearning is an excellent way to deliver compliance training, but can be a burden to users. And if they feel they already understand the subject, the impact of taking the eLearning each year can lessen. We all want learners to be engaged with elearning content to get the most of what it can deliver. So let’s look at the solution.

Elearning that adapts to knowledge levels

If an eLearning course can learn what a user already understands, it can tailor the learner journey on-the-fly and provide alternative pathways throughout the course. Using personalised eLearning, no two learner journeys need to be the same: the eLearning will gather information about how much a learner knows as they interact with the course and will focus on areas the learner does not have a great deal of knowledge about. And it can fast-track the learner through areas they clearly understand well. This means that learners spend more time focussing on areas they need to develop, and less time going over areas they have already demonstrated a competency in.

Personalised elearning journey – nuanced scenarios

There are many ways that eLearning can learn how much the user already understands. A powerful method is to begin a course with a nuanced scenario which challenges learners to apply what they know (or even what they think they know) to a detailed situation. The trick here is to design a scenario that is genuinely challenging so that the elearning can really understand the user’s prior knowledge. We believe the scenario should be bespoke as well – written specifically for the organisation and users who’ll be taking the course. It’s no good having a scenario in an Anti-Bribery course which details being asked to provide grease payments while driving a lorry across the Middle East if the end users are all office based! When the scenario is designed carefully, we know that the elearning course can understand what the learner already knows and can send them on an appropriate path throughout the elearning.

Using checkpoint questions

Checkpoint questions are excellent tools to help cement learning and you’ll find them in a majority of elearning. Usually, they aren’t scored so it doesn’t matter if the learner gets them right or wrong. But what we’ve found is that we can still use information gleaned from how learners answer these questions. Elearning we develop looks at how learners interact with questions to determine how much they understand about subjects, and can use that to direct them down different pathways throughout the elearning.

Unique learning pathways

Whether eLearning is providing a linear or non-linear route through the content, great content is made up of lots of learning pathways for learners to explore. Using personalised eLearning, we guide them down specific pathways depending on their level of knowledge. With compliance subjects, we normally need to ensure that a learner sees all the content, but we can allow learners to easily work through content they already understand. But what we can comfortably say is that each learner can enjoy a personalised elearning experience with pathways through the content which are relevant to them.
