Cancer Research UK is the world’s largest cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research, formed by a merger between The Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund back in 2002.
The charity receives no Government funding for its research, so relies on the generosity of the public to fund its life-saving work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. One in two people born in the UK after 1960 will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives, but survival is improving and has doubled in the last 40 years. The charity’s ambition is to accelerate progress and see 3 in 4 people surviving cancer for 10 years or more by 2034.
Cancer Research UK funds high-quality research that improves our understanding of cancer and helps scientists and doctors develop new, better and kinder treatments. They also carry out a range of activities to increase knowledge and awareness of cancer, and contribute to its prevention and treatment. For example, they played a key role in standardised cigarette packaging being implemented across the UK. And they are working on many fronts to ensure more cancers are diagnosed earlier, including raising awareness of symptoms, understanding early disease biology to help develop new, better tests and campaigning to ensure the health system is set up to diagnose cancer early.
However, a charity is still a business at the end of the day, and its success depends on the smooth running of the back office operations. Therefore, ensuring the Business Systems that Cancer Research UK deploys are cost effective and as efficient as possible is key to the running of the charity and keeping costs to a minimum, so that donations can be spent on achieving its vision of bringing forward the day when all cancers are cured.
