Most of everyone’s day starts with a coffee and breakfast but not on this day for Cindi as she was the first to admit her stomach was churning that day! Cindi Astley, Pre Sales Solution Consultant, Embridge was standing up with her colleague Julie Miller, Principal HR & Payroll Consultant to present “Payroll Processing: Moving from the Unit4 Desktop to the Web” for the HR & Payroll User Group on Wednesday 13th November.
It was Cindi’s first User Group presentation so she was unsure on what to expect but Julie was very experienced and has many user group events under her belt, so Julie reassured Cindi that morning at breakfast as to the sort of scenario they faced and at that point Cindi felt she could have some breakfast!

After a pleasant walk to the IET in Birmingham, Cindi and Julie arrived and were greeted by Katrina Joost (Biffa) and Ashik Patel (NFER) who were hosting the event. Both immediately made Cindi feel better as they were so friendly, and Cindi started to get the feeling that this would be a good day. Harry Frost, Embridge Account Manager, arrived, and they all had a quick discussion with the technical team about how this was all going to work.
I would like to highlight that our presentation auditorium was amazing, with a technical setup that was excellent and by far, one of the best I’ve used. My OCD did kick in a bit when the very kind technical person Matt, explained that he would be in control of publishing the slides, but once he’d shown me how to show our prepared live system demonstration, it was coffee time so I could support my well known coffee addiction!

The teams moment
Julie and Cindi were on just before lunch so they had the chance to enjoy the other presentations (Unit4 Customer Support updates, the Competencies Module and Cloud Optimisation). Further fuelled by coffee at the break (did Cindi mention her addiction?), they were ready to take the stage.
Their moment in the spotlight started with a simple question “How many people were in HR and how many in Payroll?”. They assumed that a Payroll audience might be minimal so they were really pleasantly surprised to see that Payroll roles formed over half of our audience. This immediately made Cindi feel better, and from the minute Julie introduced our crocheted Payroll Snake “Sammy”, the engagement in the room increased, leading to a really interactive session with lots of questions.
It was now lunch time and Julie, Harry and Cindi were having lots of conversations and after the afternoon sessions of Dynamic Forms, Workspaces and Cloud Readiness, the sun set on a fabulous day.
Cindi’s final reflections
My main takeaway was how passionate people get about Payroll. I heard several people state that it was the main reason they came and have since talked to other clients who wished they’d come after finding out about our session. I hope this increases attendance in future as (in my humble opinion) this is a very worthwhile, and an important event in the calendar.
