Is your ERP system like a 3* hotel?

Written by Tiago Bruno {our ERP System development guru}

Whilst working away from home recently, I found myself once again staying in a comfortable but modest 3* hotel room surrounded by the usual lacklustre necessities hoteliers believe we need as a paying customer to fulfil our immediate needs during our stay.  From my picture, you can see that my facilities are adequate but basic.

Were the contents of my bedside table providing me with the bare necessities? USB port or superfast broadband? No.  I had a notebook and pen, but who was going to leave me a message? Tea and coffee making facilities – check, but where were the fruit infused tea bags? And does anyone use a trouser press any more, I need a concierge!  This was just a 2 night stay away from home, a place to lay my head for 2 nights.  I wasn’t expecting luxuries such as 100% Egyptian cotton sheets or jasmine scented bubble bath, I didn’t need them.  What I did need was wi-fi to finish my presentation and somewhere to charge my flat smartphone. In today’s terms, these items are as important to me as the hangers in the wardrobe. Not complicated, just simple everyday needs – right?

My situation got me to thinking about how crucial it is to be able to deliver exactly what the customer not only needs but aspires to have without having to ask for it.  We are no longer in the 90’s or even the 00’s as my poor tired hotel room would have me believe. We are cruising into the mid 10’s fast and while our technical abilities are rocketing ahead at break-neck speed, why are we not able to keep up when delivering a service?

We often hear the phrase about how much the world has changed over the past x number of years, but are we not forgetting that the world is constantly changing, period?

When it comes to our ERP systems, ‘complex’ and ‘difficult to learn’ are expressions that need to be banished forever. Easy to use, up to date, flexible business solutions are what our customers should expect now. The answer lies within the deliverable screens. The simpler the screen the more productive the system is. Spending weeks training users is not cost effective. By simplifying our screens we reduce the complexity of the function and in turn reduce training times.  This can give our end users the confidence to click on the right button within 3-5 seconds because they understand the screen. Having confidence empowers the end user to challenge the screen functionality, question its limitations and seek out adaptions if they are available.

With the main difference between the various ERP systems out there being how the screens are delivered and by how much they can be adapted, Unit4 Business World has already recognised the need to put the people first. They want their ERP solutions to fit like a glove, not just plug the gaps.

Unit4 Business World has a nifty little solution called ACT (Agresso Customisation Tool).  This feature can be applied on top of a standard screen. Here at Embridge Consulting, we have the experience, creativity and know-how to use this super intelligent feature to its full potential; setup and tweak the configuration to deliver that extra slice of functionality that will improve the end users’ experience.  ACT will make your screen work harder, enhancing its function and encouraging the end user to think about their next decision.  Keeping it simple, it reduces the learning curve and builds confidence within the user. A simple and effective solution, easily deliverable, guaranteed to take you up a notch on the star rating – fast.

So back to my latest hotel experience. The bottom line is, most 3* hotels are going to deliver you an adequate service as a paying guest knowing you’re not going to expect anything more than what you’ve signed up for.  Many will tell you that you need that pen and notepad.

If Embridge was a 3* hotel, we’d reconfigure a few things to make your stay more comfortable.  We’d maybe keep the pen and notepad paraphernalia (after all, we do still love to borrow a hotel pen from time to time), but also install a USB port next to the plug socket and replace the phone with an in-room iPad! We think you would come and stay with us time and time again.

Of course, we are not just 3*, but that is for you to decide for yourself after you get the Embridge Consulting treatment. If you want to have outstanding customer care and expert advice, talk to one of our team today – either call us on (0)1474 338735 or email us here.
